In Celebration of its 100th birthday, MG is launching a brand new electric roadster in August this year. If you’re up to date with this car brand, you’ll know it’s been a hot minute since they launched an all-new sportscar, so this has been a long time coming.

Back in 2017, MG teased the idea of a new electric roadster, conceived as a passion project by a team of designers at SAIC (MG’s parent company). Fast forward to 2021, the Cyberster concept was shown in Shanghai, receiving an enthusiastic response from attendees. The chairman of SAIC saw this reaction and approved it for production instantly.

Riding on the same architecture as the MG4 hatchback, the final car went on sale earlier this year. Here’s everything you need to know about the MG Cyberster.

Who is MG?
Renowned for its iconic open-top two-seater cars, MG has been a symbol of automotive excellence since 1924. Today, MG offers a diverse range of sustainable electric and electrified vehicles, dedicated to making electric driving accessible to everyone. Under Chinese ownership, MG delivers exceptional value for money, with vehicles crafted in factories across multiple countries.

Overview of the MG Cyberster
The MG Cyberster marks MG’s return to building roadsters, continuing the tradition that started with the T-Type models back in the 1930s, closely followed by the MGA, MGB, and MGF. It’s also one of the first electric roadsters that is on the affordable end of the spectrum, meaning you can experience the thrills of driving a sports car without the premium price tag.

Design
The Cyberster’s design retains the striking appeal of a concept car even in its production form. It’s comparable in size to the BMW Z4, but it commands attention with an exotic, high-end appearance.

Its bold styling includes unique features like arrow-shaped light clusters at the rear and electric doors which open at the touch of a button on the window trim or key which offers a futuristic design.

The inside boasts comfortable, supportive, and adjustable seating ensuring a pleasant driving experience, and the materials used feel luxurious for the car’s price point. As you sit in the driver’s seat, you’ll find three touch screens behind and around the steering wheel that will take time to familiarise yourself with. These screens include:

·       Dial readout

·       Navigation and media

·       Settings and trip information

Although there are many great features of this sportscar, some features may not appeal to everyone. For example, the driving position sits slightly too high which could cause problems for taller drivers. Additionally, the cabin’s controls can be overwhelming, offering information overload rather than a straightforward switchgear which could potentially complicate the driving experience.

Engine & performance
The MG Cyberster packs an incredibly powerful engine, especially impressive for a sports car priced at around £60,000. Buyers can choose between rear-wheel drive, or four-wheel drive configurations both offered at similar price points. However, it’s worth noting that there is no option for a manual gearbox. Additionally, the Cyberster’s acceleration is so rapid (0-62mph in 3.2 seconds) that you’ll probably need to give your passenger a heads-up before you floor it.
